Course Information

Types of GT1000 Sections

There are three general types of GT1000 sections: Interdisciplinary, Departmental, and Cohort:

  • Interdisciplinary sections are open to freshmen in any major.  These sections are generally taught by campus administrators with advanced degrees and knowledge of first-year transition issues.

  • Departmental sections are offered within a School or College and are restricted to students in those majors (or to students who are strongly considering a certain major).  These sections are typically taught by faculty in those departments, and have a stronger focus on that particular major.

  • Cohort Sections- are restricted to freshmen who are part of a specific program, such as President’s Scholars, GT-Savannah students, or Honors Program students. Permits may be required for these sections.  These sections are taught by both faculty and administrators who are involved in the particular programs.

Course Goals

The GT1000 course demonstrates Georgia Tech's commitment to the successful transition and experience of new members to our community. Specific goals are as follows:

  • To assist students in their transition to and success at Georgia Tech by providing opportunities for students to develop personal and academic skills.

  • To provide opportunities to develop relationships with students, faculty and administrators and the larger GT community.

  • To offer instruction and practice in a range of learning skills, time management and organizational skills, career understanding and self assessment.

  • To introduce students to the wide array of helpful resources on campus, presented at times that traditionally students have need to know of them, thus increasing their helpfulness.

  • To engage students in their major curriculum through exploration of coursework, exposure to opportunities in their major including research and study abroad, and development of future career goals through interviews with people in the field and access to informational resources.

Course Textbook

A textbook has been developed specifically for GT1000 and is available at the Georgia Tech Barnes and Noble Bookstore: GT1000: The Freshman Seminar (2009-10 Edition).  This edition is for both Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 sections.

In addition, in Fall 2009, students will be reading Outcasts United (www.outcastsunited.com) by Warren St. John. The book will be available with the textbook at a special discounted price at the bookstore.
